April Fool! It would be great if those headlines were true, but then again we'd have a lot less grist for our creative mill. Which is exactly what we do every year at this time grinding the current topics into food for thought served on a platter of music and laughter. Right now our Youth Theater Project's teen artists are finishing their original scripts which they'll perform April 24 & 25 at our studio. They're tackling topics ranging from racial profiling and police brutality to abuse in intimate relationships. And they have a lot to say on the subjects. Meanwhile our summer main stage creative team is busily working on FreedomLand. As the title suggests, we're addressing the irony of the diminishing rights of citizens in a country that spends trillions to bring freedom to the rest of the world. Plenty to sink our teeth into there!

 

A big part of our vision / mission is getting back on the road and heading east of the Rockies. To facilitate this, our generous friends at the Puffin Foundation financed the purchase of a brand almost new truck!!! Their desire to help bring the Troupe back to a new generation of East Coasters has given us the gift of road worthiness again and we are ready to go!!

 

So far 2015 has been really exciting for us and we're embracing the future with renewed vigor and solidarity.

Youth Theater Project - Tomorrow's Truckers
We Day!

Our extremely popular Youth Theater Project (YTP) is halfway through its three month play creation process! Thirty-two teen artists  were selected to participate in our after school, stipend-paying, theater program. Recently the teens also had the honor of attending a social justice, youth summit called We Day.  

 

Coached in the Mime Troupe style of collaborative playmaking by experienced SFMT teachers, directors and designers, these local teens voice their issues & concerns- and create original plays that will be performed for FREE!

 

When: Friday April 24 @ 7.30pm & Saturday April 25 @ 3.00pm

Summer Internships
for Roadies to Focus Their Craft
This program provides exciting opportunities for college students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in several areas of theater production.

Calling All Groupies - Summer Workshop

SFMT teaches a summer workshop offered to 20 talented people from around the world. These  individuals are the backbone of our crew! Their goal is to collaboratively create an original political one-act rooted in the Mime Troupe style of Popular Theater. The ensemble building curriculum will include Commedia dell'Arte, American Melodrama & Improv. 

 

This workshop is FREE with a 1 to 1 work exchange agreement. Participants will work in the parks, in our office and scene/costume/prop shops with the rest of our roadie members. Participants may opt to pay for the workshop if their schedules do not allow for the work exchange.

Mark your calendars and save the date!

Saturday May 16 @ 5.00pm we will be holding the first public reading of our summer play in progress, FreedomLand. Please come and stay afterwards to offer your comments and thoughts. We value your opinions and have found it to be very helpful in our collaborative playmaking process. So join please join us!

Also save the date of June 7th for an open rehearsal time TBA.  This will be your second chance to get a sneak peak of our summer show progress.

First Public Reading

Touring Troupers Return to 855 Treat
Steve Friedman and Denny Partridge met in 1970 as fellow-members of the SFMT's first collective. They moved east together in 1976 and spent the next 30 years creating, performing and teaching popular theater in New York City and around the world. Since 2006 they've lived in Vermont, where they collaborate as Mud Time Theater.

On May 10 & 11 they'll bring two of their teeny two-person plays to the Mime Troupe studio: MILDRED TAKEN CRAZY and THE NINE QUESTIONS. They hope all their old pals and comrades, and anyone else who's interested, will come and see what they've been reduced to. The two plays concern disturbing episodes from Vermont history; their style is epic minimalism. Warning: The plays may upset young children, but are fine for a Mother's Day outing.

      

When: Sunday May 10th at 2.00pm & Monday May 11th @ 8.00p

In Memoriam of Earl Crabb

 

We are sorry to share the sad news of the passing of Earl Crabb longtime Trouper, friend and Treasurer of our Board of Directors. Earl has been a part of our greater artistic family since his time working with our comrades at the Pickle Family Circus years ago. Earl was not only a positive supporter of our collective efforts but as a skilled photographer who documented Troupe and Pickles' projects and events for decades. Likable and good humored, Earl was a truly kind man who always chose helpful rather than harsh words. He was a gentleman in every way and we feel the loss. Our hearts go out to his wife Giselle and his family.

with a committee of dedicated troupers are midway through a feasibility study of how the Troupe can improve the building's space to better meet not just the company's needs but also those of our community. And on an even longer range note, the company is finally able to begin the intensive strategic planning sessions that will inform our organizational structure to allow our vision to be achieved in a solid sustainable manner.


ED HOLMES 
is getting ready for the 37th Annual St Stupid's Day Parade which will strut its stuff yet again to honor Saint Stupid, the patron Saint of Civilizations and Parking meters. This FREE event is open to the public to participate. Odd costumes, absurd signage, noise makers and a willfully irreverent attitude to the business of religion and the religion of business are encouraged. Fun for the whole family.
