Please join us for the FREE reading of Works of Progress 2 on Monday, May 7 at 7:00 PM @ 855 Treat Ave. This time, emerging writer Cristóbal McKinney throws us into a surreal world full of searing sexuality, manipulation, power, love and catharsis in his play Bourbon Tastes Like Shit (that's why I drink it). Two men and two women with murky and dark desires set about to find their place and who they are in the ever darkening kaleidoscope of America. Bourbon doesn't just put forth the eternal question, "What is America?" but also, "What does it taste like?"

Discussion-based Workshop
This year the UN- Declared 2012 International Year of Cooperatives. To spread awareness of this initiative, we will be hosting a youth workshop taught by the Toolbox for Education and Social Action (TESA).
 The "Cooperative Teach-In" focuses on engaging colleges, universities, and other schools on what co-ops are and how they positively change local and global communities. This initiative allows people who are interested in a wide variety of issues to engage with the national cooperative movement and see how co-ops relate to them: from workers' rights to economic development, democratic control, environmental justice, fair trade, community empowerment, social entrepreneurship, food justice, and small farmers.
We have been in contact with local high school students who are excited to participate in this discussion-based workshop. Therefore, we would love to have as many representatives from other co-ops and collectives come and engage on a discussion panel for the workshop. The workshop will be on Monday May 14th from 4:30-6:30pm at our studio at 855 Treat Ave. And it's FREEE!

Dear Trouper,
Spring is here. Birds are singing. Everything is blooming. The wind is howling and everyone's sneezing. And here at the Troupe we're busy as the proverbial (but not yet extinct) bees.
Starting with International Worker's Day, this month you won't be able to go anywhere with out running into a Mime Trouper doing their thing.
Also-as the presidential election fervor cranks into high gear, we remind everyone that ALL elections matter, so don't forget the June primaries and VOTE!!

The Last Election
The Mime Troupe opens its 53rd season on July 4th in Dolores Park with THE LAST ELECTION. Pity the poor 1 per cent. Abused in that sliver of press they don't own, condemned in the streets by a rabble who don't appreciate the benefits of being trickled down upon, and raked over the coals by the few politicians who aren't lined up to kiss their wealth and power. Talk about an oppressed minority! Finally, someone is stepping up to tell the story of these steaming sacks of benevolence as the San Francisco Mime Troupe presents THE LAST ELECTION, a tale that will warm the heart of every billionaire. Based on the classic 19th century melodrama The Poor of New York, the Troupe turns the story on its head, telling it from the point of view of the misunderstood Godzillionaires who have made this country what it is today: broke.
Michael Gene Sullivan directs Velina Brown, Ed Holmes, Lisa Hori-Garcia, Keiko Shimosato Carreiro, Victor Toman and Reggie D. White his musical satire about "true" American values. Featuring music, lyrics, and musical direction by Pat Moran.

| White Rabbit, Red Rabbit
At the San Francisco International Arts Festival : Troupers Velina Brown & Michael Sullivan - along with SFMT veterans Patricia Silver, Robert Ernst, Red Diaper Baby Josh Kornbluth and many others Bay Area luminaries - will be performing White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, a humorously sly piece of meta-theater by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour. Unable to leave his country to perform this piece, Nassim sent the script out into the world to represent him, and to be performed by a single actor - but a different one each night. At the performance the performer will be handed, on stage, in front of the audience, a sealed envelope containing the script - which they've never seen before. They will then perform the play without a director, set, or knowledge of what will happen next! | Abraham Lincoln Brigade Celebration
Sunday May 27th at 2:00pm the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA) celebrates the 76th reunion of the Lincoln Brigade, Americans who volunteered to fight against Franco's fascists in the Spanish Civil War. Guest speaker Kate Doyle, 2012 recipient of the ALBA/Puffin Human Rights Award, discusses genocide and justice in Guatemala. The program also includes an update on former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón, an outspoken champion of human rights. Musicians Bruce Barthol, Velina Brown, Randy Craig, Tony Marcus, and Barrett Nelson perform songs of the Spanish Civil War, with images of courage and resistance from Richard Bermack, documentary photographer and author of The Front Lines of Social Change: Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. For receiving the Jerry Garcia Award for their 2011 Youth Theater Program from the Rex Foundation! In memory of Grateful Dead guitarist and founding Rex board member Jerry Garcia, this award is designed to honor and support individuals and groups that work to encourage creativity in young people.
