It's that time of year again. Picnics on the beach in gale force winds and fireworks that give multi-colored hues to the fog. Summertime in San Francisco. Of course for those of you away from the coast it's sunscreen central. But wherever you are we invite you to celebrate summer with us as we celebrate our 55th year! And we have got a lot going on! Beginning this Thursday the 26th, we will host the first of our series of Community Forums (see directly below). Come & join the conversation. In this mid-term election year it's a great way to flex your citizen muscles and get ready for our annual patriotic ritual of opening on July 4th in Dolores Park (despite the park re-construction, we'll be at Dolores & 19th). Come see us in our new show Ripple Effect as we exercise our rights of assembly and free speech. Community Forum THIS Thursday June 26th & Our Summer Season Starts July 4th! |
Panel Discussion on Housing in SF
7:30 on June 26th This Thursday!
We are hosting a Panel discussion revolving around the Ellis Act evictions and the housing crisis in San Francisco, featuring Chandra Redack, Benito Santiago, Erin McElroy, Tommi Avicolli Mecca, and Andy Blue. As a long-time housing activist in San Francisco, Tommi Avicolli Mecca works with the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco, a tenants rights organization that offers free counseling for San Francisco tenants in all types of housing, including rent-control, SROs, public housing and Section 8. For the past six months, Xi'an Chandra Redack has been helping to organize her building of residence at 1049 Market Street against an impending eviction. She is particularly interested in LGBT people of color, women, youth and transgender issues. Erin McElroy is the founder and director of the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, a data visualization, data analysis, and digital storytelling collective documenting the dispossession of San Francisco Bay Area residents. Erin also organizes with Eviction Free San Francisco, a direct action mutual aid group that fights evictions with tenants facing displacement. Benito Santiago, born and raised in SF, is a dancer, educator, musician, and activist currently facing eviction by Michael Harrison of Vanguard Properties. Benito is a disabled senior, and has been organizing with Eviction Free San Francisco to fight his eviction. Andy Blue recently helped organize the Plaza 16 Coalition festival in the 16th/Mission Plaza as a celebration of the community and as a statement against reckless development that drives displacement -- in particular, a 10-story monstrosity of luxury housing proposed to tower over the plaza-- the biggest market-rate development in Mission District history.

Skyrocketing rents. Loss of diversity. Certain workers welcomed like saviors, while other workers are discarded like trash. The War on the Poor. And San Francisco - the capital of the Revolution - becoming the center of corporate surveillance technology. Veteran of the Revolution Deborah Johnson thinks she knows. So does immigrant-turned-super patriot Sunny Nguyen. And so does Silicon Valley's newest star, small-town transplant Jeanine Adenauer. And each has reason to despise the other. So how do they end up together in a tour boat in the middle of San Francisco Bay? Each one has a story to tell; a broken dream that brought them to this moment, and a past that divides them from the others. But can the old commie, the tech newbie, and the flag-waving beautician find common ground ashore, or will they all sink under the waves? Who - or what - is S.U.S.I.? And can anyone stop... The Octopus
