Dear Trouper,

Next week in celebration of our 237th Independence Day, post offices and banks will close, mattress sales will boom and fireworks will brighten the night sky. And we'll be in Dolores Park opening our 54th season which would not be happening without you. Your financial and emotional support made Oil and Water jump from the page to the stage.

 

As we prepare to send a collective shout out for our planet there are 4 ways you can help:

 

First, join in one of our Community Forums and learn from those who are on the frontline of this issue.

Second, join us to meet Troupe members at a fundraising reception and art sale on 7/27 after the Berkeley Live Oak show hosted by loyal Troupe supporter Kate Harrison.  

Third, wear your Mime Troupe t-shirt on July 4th & 5th and become a walking billboard for your favorite political theater group.

And last but certainly not least, join us in the parks as we declare our independence from fossil fuel and the evil that it fuels because, clearly, Greed and Earth go together like Oil & Water.

ONE: Cecile Pineda 
author of: Devil's Tango: How I learned the Fukushima Step by Step
7-9p on June 27th (this Thursday!)

Cecile Pineda, author of Devil's Tango: How I learned the Fukushima Step by Step, will be speaking to the SF Mime Troupe and their friends on June 27 about the nuclear industry and about how the energy and the weaponry aspects are inextricably linked. At the same time, she will be addressing the harms to the environment that the industry presents in terms of soil, water, and air contamination through leakage in  nuclear waste sites, as well as, permanent contamination to soils of countries where DU has been used by The US and its NATO surrogates. The San Francisco Mime Troupe proudly presents our Summer 2013 production "Oil & Water." This year we are bringing you a program of two short plays linked by their focus on fossil fuels, natural resources, and climate change.

Part 1: "Deal with the Devil" is set in the not too distant future and begins with the discovery of a dead body in the White House. Following decades of disastrous environmental decisions and a commitment to maintaining the status quo, the USA has fallen upon hard times. All appears lost until an unexpected solution presents itself- but is it worth the risk? Deal with the Devil draws upon elements of Film Noir and 1970s cop shows while asking the question "What will it take to break the cycle?" 

Part 2: "Crude Intentions" takes place in modern day San Francisco. Tomasa and Gracie run a small restaurant in the city and are just starting to make ends meet when a visitor from Tomasa's past attempts to collect on an unfulfilled obligation. Tomasa's secret former life is revealed to Gracie, and the two are faced with a life altering dilemma. "Crude Intentions" is inspired by the ongoing legal struggles between Chevron and the plaintiffs who were awarded a $19 billion settlement for environmental devastation in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Long-time Mime Troupe member Michael Gene Sullivan will be celebrating the publication of his stage adaptation of George Orwell's "1984" with a reading July 8th, at the Z Space Below in San Francisco, before he goes to Barcelona this summer to work on the Catalan translation of the play! Click here for information.

And even longer-time Troupe member Ed Holmes has photo art up at CITY COLLEGE, 2nd floor library as part of Veterans art show now till November.

Additionally, Holmes is promoting WHIFFLE KICKING. You read that right...a whiffle ball that you kick around a park. Kinda like burning man meets polo without the horses, ravers, or dust, crossed with slow motion roller derby and/or hyper cricket...as organized by the st stupid parade people as painted by Seurat on a absinthe binge with a whiff of Zippy.
